Joyful Thinking: Instructional Routines That Transform Math Learning
Imagine classroom routines not just for managing behavior, but for nurturing deep mathematical thinking. In this book club session, we’ll explore Routines for Reasoning by Grace Kelemanik, Amy Lucenta, and Susan Janssen Creighton—a resource that offers practical, classroom-tested routines designed to help all students, especially those who struggle, develop key mathematical reasoning skills.
Together, we will experience several of these powerful routines firsthand, including Three Reads, Capturing Quantities, Connecting Representations, and Recognizing Repetition. These routines offer familiar, repeatable structures that help students internalize problem-solving strategies, engage in the Standards for Mathematical Practice, and build confidence in their mathematical thinking.
Designed for K–12 math teachers and coaches, this interactive session aligns with the conference strands of teachers as learners and transformational math teaching and learning. Come ready to collaborate, reflect, and leave with practical tools (and if you are one of the lucky participants with a copy of the book) to support meaningful math learning in your classroom.
