Building Balanced Assessments to Maximize Impact
Tuesday August 5, 2025 TBA
When selecting evidence of student learning, what story about their learning is being told through their work? The primary goal of a balanced assessment system is to improve student learning by providing teachers with valuable information about a student's understanding and needs. What does 68% actually mean against the standard?  Will this grade help me to see what the learner understands? With a quality assessment, a grade can determine accurately the journey of the learner. Participants will be provoked to rethink how and why balanced assessments are necessary and learn how to provide targeted, differentiated support to students.

Identifying the Math Main Idea of a Story Problem (K-5)
Tuesday August 5, 2025 TBA
When you ask elementary math teachers what their students struggle with most, they quickly and easily answer – word problems. This was true for me when I was in the classroom too. When I realized that word problems are really just stories, I had a bit of an aha moment. That means we have to understand the main idea of the math story to solve them effectively.  And that’s how Structures of Equality were born, a strategy that allows students to comprehend word problems.
At the core of SoE is the math man idea. The math main idea is the missing piece that bridges the gap for students who struggle to comprehend what they are being asked to figure out in number stories. When students know how to find the math main idea, they can accurately draw a visual representation of what is occurring in the story.
By the end of this interactive session, participants will be able to identify the math main idea of any K-5 math story and will learn about strategies and resources to help their students do the same.

Playing With Math
Tuesday August 5, 2025 TBA
Join us for this interactive session where we will explore math games that will intrigue and engage students in grades K-2. Developmentally appropriate math instruction is essential for our youngest learners as children learn best through play-based learning experiences! In this session a variety of math games will be showcased, with suggestions for differentiating to meet the needs of a variety of learners.  The session will include a make and take opportunity, in which participants will create ready to use math games. There will also be time for participants to share their game ideas and discuss ways the games could be differentiated.
